We had a great October! The Halloween parades were a success. All the kiddos had a blast and looked great in their costumes.
In reading, we have completed Unit 1 and 2 in the Wonders reading program. The children took the unit 1 assessment as practice. The unit assessments include a lot of material so we do a little everyday of the week. We learned how to use our private offices and what the expectations are during as assessment. We practiced how to listen to a question and answer it in our booklet. Unit 1 was a learning process. We went over all the answers as we did it so the children could better understand the process. All the questions are given orally in Kindergarten. We will be taking the unit 2 assessment next week. This one will be their first scored Wonders assessment. We did not focus on that fact in school-we focus on the fact that they are showing what they have learned and it is "private office time". They love the private offices! Our focus in reading this week has been on bugs. We have read about different bugs and the life cycle of a caterpillar. We put the life cycle in order by coloring and gluing pictures. The children worked really well on this activity and showed some great independence. The high frequency words that the children are responsible for are I, can, the, we, see, a, like. At this point in the year, the children are working towards 100% accuracy in identifying all their upper and lower case letters. If your child is not there yet, please practice at home. We will continue to work on it at school too. We are now working hard learning all the sounds and how to read CVC(consonant-vowel-consonant) words. Please keep reading everyday with your child for at least 20 minutes.
In writing, we are drawing pictures on focused topics. We are practicing writing our high frequency words and practicing writing very basic sentences such as I like..... We are continuing to learn to form all of our letters correctly. Please watch your child when they write and encourage them to start all the letters at the top. They know upper case letters start at the top line and most lower case start at the dotted line. They have been working hard writing their first name with an upper case for the first letter and lower case for the rest. We will move on to last names soon. The names of the lines we use to form letters are standing tall line, lying down line, clockface, super C, and forward slant line and backward slant line, frown, and smile.
In math, we have focused on shapes(circle, triangle, square, rectangle, oval, rhombus, trapezoid, and hexagon). We have worked on sorting and patterning. We played Top-It(similar to the card game War) with dot cards to work on counting and identifying groups of objects and practicing more and less. We are working on identifying number 1-20 and counting to 100. We have enjoyed using pattern blocks, geoboards, and sorting and graphing with candy corn. We have learned what a five frame is. We practice our calendar skills daily. They have learned the days of the week and months of the year. They are also learning place value up to the tens place. We are mathematicians!
As you can tell, we have been busy learning. We have also been busy learning social skills and how to be a student. We are learning to be kind and respectful to our peers and teachers. We work on filling our friends "buckets" and helping brighten people's day. We work on learning when it is a good time to chit chat and when it is time to listen. We are learning classroom skills such as lining up, raising hands, and maintaining a quiet voice during work time. Phew! Now you know why they are so tired at the end of the school day! Laurie and I are both enjoying all of the children. Report cards will be going home mid December. Please keep an eye out for a sign up genius on scheduling conferences. I plan to send that out by the end of next week.
Weather note-we try to go outside daily. Please send your child to school with appropriate cold weather clothing for outdoors-Thank you!
