Happy October! The children have been busy learning and having fun!
Important date to remember-Wednesday October 31st-
Whole school Halloween Parade at 1pm. The afternoon kindergarten class does take part in that. We ask the afternoon students to bring their costumes in a bag to school and they will change into them closer to the parade time. Morning class students can take part in the parade-They can meet us in our classroom dressed in their Halloween costume by 12:45. Both classes will have a simple celebration at their individual class times. More information will come regarding the festivities. We ask that the costumes not include any weapons(real or pretend) and that at this age they not be too scary or gory.
Parents have been asking about volunteer opportunities. When volunteer opportunities arise, I will post them on here. These opportunities will include helping out with classroom parties or special events. I am always looking for a class photographer for special events. There are also opportunities for putting together materials at home, too.
Homework reminder-Kindergarten homework includes reading everyday for 20 minutes. We have learned the high frequency words I, can, the , we, and see. They should be practicing these words daily and be able to read them in all settings. They are all working hard learning both upper case letters and lower case letters. If your child comes home with a ring of letters to practice, please practice them daily and return them to school daily. We practice them everyday at school too. We are working at 100% identification of both upper case and lower case letters soon. We will move on to sounds and decoding these sounds in words.
We have been very busy focusing on a lot of great topics. This week in Language arts we are focusing on how senses help you learn. Last week, we focused on how baby animals move, and before that was how can we get along with new friends. We have started reading groups and are reading a guided reading book everyday. Every other Friday, we read with our reading buddies. The morning class are buddies with a 5th grade class and the afternoon are buddies with a 3rd grade class. They love being read to and they will start to read to their buddies too. We have been practicing writing our first name with the first letter being upper case and the rest being lower case.
In Math, we have focused on counting to 20(we will move on to 100 soon). We are also learning to identify all of our numbers to 20. We learned about different shapes(circle, square, triangle, rhombus, hexagon, and trapezoid). We created patterns with shapes. We identified how many items in a group and played memory with dot cards and played Top-It with dot cards. Top-It is very similar to the card game WAR. Each child flips a card-the child that has the card with the most dots keeps the cards. We are getting to know each number in different ways-numeral, ten frame, tallies. etc. We've explored our environment looking for numbers in our everyday lives. As a class, we have created graphs and read from them.
We learned about apples and did craft activities around that theme. We will be moving on to pumpkins.
We have started visiting the library and borrowing books for our classroom.
Fall time weather is here. We will go outside everyday(unless it is steadily raining)-please send your child dressed for the weather. Thank you!
